Because they have managed well in recent years in order to be able to use the funds needed in difficult times.

„Yes, we can afford it“

The city will have the campaign cost 40 million euros in the election year – provided that all vouchers are redeemed. „Yes, we can afford it,“ said Ludwig. Because they have managed well in recent years in order to be able to use the funds needed in difficult times. After all, it is about 6,000 inns with around 60,000 employees. There are also 3,000 coffee makers.

For comparison: According to Ludwig, Viennese gastronomy generates around 1.4 billion euros per year. The mayor explained that the aim was to give gastronomy a „boost“ and to use the vouchers to encourage the Viennese to visit „their“ cafes, bars and inns.

„Stimulants“ for establishments

Vienna’s Chamber of Commerce President Walter Ruck saw the receipts as „stimulants“ for restarting operations that had been closed for two months. How many bars in the city will open again on Friday and how many will survive the crisis in the medium term cannot be estimated at the moment, Ruck told the APA. Larger restaurants and coffee houses would probably have it easier than small ones because of the larger space available. And the pub garden will also be important in the coming months.

Sales losses of up to 50 percent are feared

In general, Ruck expects sales losses of 40 to 50 percent in the entire industry. In addition to the safety requirements – such as larger distances between the individual tables and a limited number of people per table – the absence of tourists would also cause considerable losses in sales: „We had more than 17 million overnight stays in the previous year. We will miss them this year,“ said the Chamberlain.

Aunt Helli is 95 years old and on

ill. She lives in a retirement home in the city of Vienna. She is banned from visiting for almost eight weeks

Coronavirus

protected. Your great-nieces try to keep in touch and prevent the threat of being bedridden.

„What kind of virus is that supposed to be?“ Asks Aunt Helli. She is sitting on the bed in pink terrycloth pajamas, it’s March 11th, 7:00 p.m., only the bedside lamp is on. Next to her is a plate with a sausage roll, wrapped in cellophane. Lunch is drying up on the table. Until a few weeks ago, Aunt Helli was still wandering through the pensioner’s house at this time. When her nieces came to see her, she would go out to dinner with them. At the beginning of January, after a bottle of champagne, she fell and broke two ribs. Since then she has preferred to stay in bed during the day. The free newspapers are piled up on the flowered ceiling and in the basket of the rollator. Every time at the newspaper stand in the foyer she takes a copy because she thinks she’s still missing it. Only: she doesn’t read it.

The corona virus is therefore known to her, but not its consequences. 245 people have so far tested positive in Austria. Events in the hall must not have more than 100 people. The retirement home, in which Aunt Helli lives with 379 people, will soon close the gates unannounced and post a security guard in front of it. Relatives are still scurrying through the corridors, some have provisions with them. I also plan to swear my great-aunt to the crisis. Aunt Helli survived the Second World War. She has beaten cancer twice. She doesn’t believe in the virus. She cries another tear and offers me her bed to sleep. I stop my last kiss. That was never important to her anyway.

© Nina Strasser Euro Pride, formerly known as the Rainbow Parade, is Aunt Helli’s favorite event.

According to the passport, Aunt Helli’s name is Helene Proksch. She is 95 years old and my grandmother’s sister. Three and a half years ago, after 65 years, she moved into one of the „Houses for Living“ in Vienna. She lives in assisted living in a small apartment with a balcony and visits the „day family“, a group for people with dementia. Nurses pick her up for dinner and carry her coffee break afterwards. Aunt Helli has now covered her senior citizen alarm clock with the date and extra-large digits.

Once a week my sister Eve and I reserve aunt Helli time.
