Just in time for the launch date, Microsoft began distributing the free upgrade to Windows 10 on July 29th. We explain when you can expect Windows 10 and how you can tell if it’s already there.

This is what the new Windows 10 looks like

The starting signal for the new Windows era was given in New Zealand. With a time advantage of ten hours, the free upgrade first went to the Kiwis‘ computers. In Germany, the upgrade process is said to have been available since 6 a.m. Nevertheless, most users will have to be patient a little longer before Windows 10 is here.

With the first update wave, Microsoft initially supplies the so-called Windows Insiders. These are Windows users who participated in Microsoft’s public testing program. According to the company, that was a good five million Windows fans worldwide.

Know when the download is due

In a second wave of delivery, Microsoft is serving customers who have registered for the free upgrade. This process should start later in the week. Any registered user can find out whether the time has come by right-clicking on the upgrade icon in the Windows taskbar. The entry can be found in the context menu "Download Windows 10". If no download starts after clicking on the entry, you will have to be patient.

Explorer can be used to find out whether Windows has already secretly saved the installation files in the background on the hard drive. The system files for Windows 10 are on the drive "C: \" filed. The corresponding folder called "$ Windows. ~ BT" however, it is hidden. If you want to check the download status, you must have activated the display of hidden files.

According to initial reports, the files take up between three and five gigabytes of storage space. For the installation of Windows 10, however, at least 20 gigabytes of free space should be available on the system drive ("C: \") to be available. We explain in our article which requirements still have to be met "Is your computer really fit for Windows 10?".

Download Windows 10 as ISO

Just in time for the market launch, Microsoft surprisingly also published the ISO files for the new Windows. Previously it was said that the image files would not appear for a few weeks. If you don’t want to wait for the update, you can download Windows 10 directly from Microsoft, burn it to DVD or save and install a USB drive. Microsoft offers a tool for this, with which the update process can also be initiated manually. However, it is important to back up your personal data and your old Windows before installing Windows.

How long can I still register?

The free upgrade to Windows 10 is possible for one year – ie until the end of July 2016. During this time, users of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 can also order the new operating system using the upgrade icon. If you don’t see the white Windows icon next to the clock, this article may help you.

The expectations of the new Windows are high. Under the catchphrase "Windows as a Service" Microsoft promises an operating system of apps and services that can keep up with Apple and Android. The software giant aims to achieve one billion Windows 10 installations on PCs, smartphones and tablets within two to three years.research topics argumentative

Hide Windows 10 Upgrade

But that should deter not a few Windows users. Because with cross-device Windows services that store personal data in the cloud, query location data and are linked to social networks, the risk of constant monitoring also increases. If you don’t want to take part, you can do without the free Windows and hide the upgrade icon. We answer here how this works and other questions about Windows 10.

During an emergency landing, a glider pilot from Berlin went down undamaged on a field in the Harz Mountains. Nobody was injured, as the police announced in Halberstadt on Wednesday. The 54-year-old pilot did not have enough updraft at noon, so he decided to land on the uncultivated field next to the B27 federal road near Blankenburg in the direction of Westerhausen.

Global warming could degrade the quality of the drinking water from the Rappbodetalsperre in the Harz Mountains. This is what researchers at the Environmental Research Center (UFZ) in Leipzig have calculated in the event that the emission of climate-damaging greenhouse gases continues unchecked until the end of the century. In this case, temperatures at the dam could be the same as those currently at Lake Garda in Italy, said the team around UFZ lake researcher Karsten Rinke on Tuesday.

The Rappbodetalsperre supplies around one million people with drinking water, especially in the south of Saxony-Anhalt. In recent years, the operators have had to deal with falling water levels due to extreme summer droughts. According to the information, drinking water has never been scarce there.

The researchers calculated several scenarios for the future of the Rappbodetalsperre: If the emission of greenhouse gases were to be stopped, the temperature on the water surface would rise by around 0.7 degrees Celsius by the year 2100; if it rose further, the temperature would rise 2.6 degrees. In the worst case, greenhouse emissions would rise unchecked – and the water on the surface of the dam would warm up by four degrees Celsius.

This scenario could affect the quality of the drinking water, it said. It is extracted at a depth of 50 meters, where in the worst case scenario the water heats up from 5 to 8 degrees Celsius. According to the UFZ researchers, warmer water can bind less oxygen, and on the other hand the speed at which oxygen is consumed by biological processes is doubled. The water could become more polluted and bacteria grow faster. The dam operators could respond by not allowing water from deeper layers to run off into rivers via an overflow, but the warmer surface water, according to the UFZ researchers.

Funny pictures, memes and GIFs are often sent via WhatsApp. The messenger automatically saves the received files in the user’s photo gallery. We’ll show you how to prevent that.

The eight biggest WhatsApp sins

Photo series with 9 pictures

A funny picture or GIF that a friend or relative sent you on WhatsApp can temporarily lift your mood. In the long term, however, such files can take up storage space on the smartphone.

Because in the standard settings, the messenger automatically saves the pictures in a photo folder. They’ll also show up in the Photo Gallery app, which can be quite annoying. After all, you don’t want to keep every picture you send. In the chats there is also a lot more useless "Picture rubbish" at.

Nine Simple WhatsApp Tricks You Should Know

With just a few clicks, you can prevent media content from automatically downloading and taking up storage space. There is also an option to ban WhatsApp images from the photo gallery. We show how to do it.

Prevent auto download

By blocking the automatic download of media content, you also save data volume. Pictures, GIFs, videos and the like are only saved on the smartphone if you specifically open them.

Open WhatsApp Settings and go to "Data and memory usage". Under the headline "Auto download media" you can now specify in detail which type of media is to be downloaded and under which conditions. For example, you can specify that video files are only downloaded to the smartphone in the WLAN network.

If you remove the check mark everywhere, you will have to open every file manually in the future. Otherwise, images and videos will only appear as blurry content.

Ban WhatsApp content from the photo gallery

If you don’t want WhatsApp content to clutter up your well-stocked photo gallery, you’ll need to use the default settings "Media visibility" to change. These are hidden in the WhatsApp settings under "Chats". There is a slider that, when activated, ensures that newly downloaded media are displayed in the gallery.

If you only want to ban the content from a certain group or from a certain contact from your gallery, there is a second option: Open the chat and tap on the three menu items. Then go on "View contact" or "Group info". You can now use the for this contact or chat group "Media visibility" restrict. This prevents a single contact from cluttering the photo gallery with annoying memes.

Five dead, presumably drowned wild boars have been discovered in the Bode in the Harz Mountains. The Harz district announced on Monday that the animals were rescued from below a weir in Neuwerk. "There is a very high probability that the wild boars drowned due to the high water level in the Bode", said official veterinarian Rainer Miethig. In order to rule out an epidemic, two veterinarians took blood samples from all pigs to be examined for African swine fever (ASF). In addition, a newcomer will be transported to the State Office for Consumer Protection in Stendal for diagnostics. The remaining wild boars would be disposed of.

Whoever wants to buy Windows has not only been asked the question since Windows 7: should it be the 32-bit or the 64-bit version? Windows XP was already available with 64 bit, but was hardly noticed because it was rarely really needed. Things look different now: Many computers are equipped with a large amount of RAM and make a 64-bit system sensible. If you buy a new PC, you often have no choice, but automatically get the 64-bit version. We answer the most important questions about Windows 7 with 64 bit.

Windows 7 is not the first 64-bit system, but it may be the last to have a 32-bit variant. Just as Windows 95 was a 32-bit Windows for the first time and the 16-bit Windows 3.1.1 retired. That was fifteen years ago, computers had about 32 or 64 megabytes of RAM. Modern computers have a hundred times as much memory, which means that a 32-bit Windows is becoming more and more of a brake.

Tower computers are now rarely available with less than four gigabytes of RAM; they often have six or even eight GB. With a 32-bit system the huge memory would be useless, a 32-bit system cannot manage more than 3.5 GB. But even if you have less than four gigabytes of memory, you should rather use 64 bits if you don’t want to take all the options for upgrading yourself.

32-bit Windows is becoming a drag

It sounds absurd at first: 64-bit doesn’t make anything faster by itself, but a 32-bit system is still slower. Because 64 bit is not a turbo for the PC, but 32 bit slows down programs and the overall system. The memory limit for programs is even lower: each 32-bit program can only be assigned a maximum of 2 GB of memory. Anyone who uses computationally intensive programs will notice the braking effect much earlier. This does not only apply to exotic server programs such as huge databases – video, audio or image processing programs can also quickly reach this limit. Virtualizers such as VirtualBox, which can be used to run a second operating system, are extremely memory-hungry.

Crack the memory limit

If the memory limit is cracked with a 64-bit Windows, a hardware upgrade becomes a sensible action. Because RAM memory bars are cheaper in price than most other hardware components. In addition, a memory upgrade is not associated with cumbersome conversion actions. Simply insert the bar, done. Even if old components have to be removed first, the matter is settled much faster than installing a new main processor or a new hard disk, which would also require copying over of all data.

New virus scanner due

In general, the old 32-bit applications also run without problems on the new Windows. When it comes to small programs, you can continue to use them without restrictions because they do not take up large amounts of memory. For system-related programs such as virus scanners, on the other hand, a 64-bit version is required, meanwhile almost all of them are also available in 64-bit – also free of charge.
